LOVE in

I didn’t anticipate LOVE being the hardest ADVENT pillar to write about in 2021.

I’m in LOVE with LOVE. I LOVE to preach and teach LOVE. LOVE makes the world go round. All you need is LOVE

but…

LOVE for writers? What does that look like?

It looks like the mirror.

Yes, you.

LOVE is so much easier to give than to receive, at least in my experience. I spent years doubting the LOVE I was given because I lacked an essential component.

I didn’t love myself

A described it to me once like this:

Say you have a flower you’d like to pot. First, you have to put dirt in the pot. Better yet, put some gravel down and then put dirt in the pot. If you just plop the plant in the pot, there’s no way it will grow or thrive. It needs nourishment and a stable environment.

That’s self-love for a writer.

We have to fill our pots with self-LOVE before we can expect to nouish anything else. That includes our writing.

I’ve talked about HOPE being the reason we keep writing (because if we don’t HOPE, we’re lost). Now we need to realize that LOVE is the reason we can write in the first place.

LOVE of words

LOVE of writing

LOVE of communication, or a message, or a medium, or whatever…

Without self-love, we might as well be dry-potting plants.

We have to LOVE ourselves as much as we LOVE writing, and I’ll tell you why:

ZERO other people can do what we do

not because writing is hard or because we put in the time or because we’re special.

No.

I mean, yes, all those things, but also, no.

I mean, no one, absolutely no one else, writes what you write, how you write it, and for whom you write it.

No one writes like me. No one writes like you.

In order for you to value your work, you must first value the person who created it.

that’s YOU.

This holiday season, LOVE yourself first and see how much more LOVE you have to give others and, yes, your writing.

Easier said than done? No problem. Drop me a line and I’ll help.

As we approach the new year, I HOPE these ADVENT messages for writers have filled you with PEACE and JOY and, of course, a deeper LOVE of writing.

happy holidays

PEACE out

Today is Pearl Harbor day.

December 7, 1941, was one of those days that people remembered.

For my generation, that day is 911, September 11, 2001.

Photo by Craig Adderley on Pexels.com

The day we all remember where we were, what we were doing, and how our lives changed.

This generation will likely remember the outbreak of COVID-19.

Think how blessed they are that this event didn’t spark a war. Think how blessed we all are. We are not in conflict with each other, at least not on a global scale. In theory, anyway, we are “all in this together.”

Photo by Cup of Couple on Pexels.com

We are living through a time of relative PEACE, and for that, I am supremely grateful.

PEACE is like health in that we don’t notice it so much as we notice its absence. We notice when it is disrupted.

In talking about PEACE, I want to first talk about grief. Events big or small affect us when we lose something or someone.

Those moments can be extra poignant around the holidays.

We go through denial, anger, bargaining, and finally acceptance.

I think PEACE, especially for writers, especially for this time of year, is about accepting what we can and cannot do. Accepting that this time of year is hard, accepting that we may not be as productive as we want to be, accepting that we may want to murder our family members at some point.

Accepting the dark and scary parts of ourselves as well as those filled with light.

Accepting the PEACE offered by other people, by God, by the universe, or whomever. Accepting that all you have to do is accept.

Photo by Armin Rimoldi on Pexels.com

This year, I challenge you to notice and appreciate all the PEACE in your life.

Cultivate PEACE where it is lacking whether that’s a difficult coworker or a disruptive family member. Lend a hand and you will receive one back. Watch and see if it doesn’t happen.

And finally, accept the PEACE you have in your life, offer it to others, and let it surround you.

See you next week

JOY up

I’m guilty of it too.

I found myself scrolling Facebook and feeling envious of all the beautiful families.

Photo by Nicole Michalou on Pexels.com

I love my life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

but…

we can all fall prey to that feeling that the grass is greener on the other side.

especially this time of year when it seems everyone is posting some holiday goodness. I’ve learned to be thankful, not just for my life the way it is, but also for my friends and families’ lives and the blessings they have.

I am thankful they are happy, healthy, and blessed.

The grass is not greener on the other side.

The grass is greener where it’s watered.

Photo by Natasha Fernandez on Pexels.com

I submit to you that JOY is an act, a verb. At the very least it’s a choice.

A hard choice to focus on the things in our lives that bring us JOY

We can choose JOY. We can choose to hold fast to those things in our lives that bring us JOY.

There is abundance of JOY in our lives already.

The choice we have is whether to look at that abundance or our scarcity.

Choose JOY.

til next week

HOPE on

Photo by Aaron Burden on Pexels.com

Final NaNo Count: 27,548

I still consider myself a winner. Know why?

I FINISHED.

That’s right. I have a finished product that is going out to Alpha readers this week. It’s not 50,000 words, but I’m not sure it was ever meant to be.

In the meantime, here’s what you can expect from me in December 2021:

Last year’s Advent series ended up being some of the best work I did all year.

With that in mind, I’m going to explore the pillars of Advent again this year, but with a more narrow focus.

Last year, I mentioned HOPE can be hard to come by for some of us this time of year.

Photo by Aaron Burden on Pexels.com

We must remember.

The holidays are not a happy, joyful, or celebratory time for everyone. For some, this is a time of grief, strife, and strain.

Please remember: In this season of light someone is sitting in the darkness.

The best way you can help is to offer HOPE: be there without hovering, offer help without solutions, and emphasize the good without diminishing the present bad. It’s a tall order, I know, but it takes a tough person to sit out their own internal battles, remember that.

This year, I want to speak specifically to the HOPE of all who consider themselves writers or who wish to become writers.

Here’s the deal, we have to have HOPE to keep going. If we give up on being published or recognized or even finished, that’s it. No one is going to do it for us.

We have to push and push and push ourselves, and that’s difficult. Much easier to give it up and blame something else. That’s the thing though. Once you realize it, you can’t unring the bell.

Nothing is stopping you but you.

I HOPE after last week you’re feeling better. HOPE you did a little self-care.

I HOPE you have a little more HOPE this week and that you’re ready to face the end of the year.

If you’re not quite so surefooted, contact me. If you need some help with quarterly planning, learning to be a writer, or just someone to talk to, I’m only a click away.

How is HOPE manifesting in your life this season? What HOPE do you have to offer other writers?

Self-Care Week (happy thanksgiving)

NaNoWriMo word count goal: 35,007

My current word count: 18,707

As you can see, it’s still not going well.

I’m coming off a rough week work-wise, and I’ve been sick.
I’m trying to find new jobs while completing the ones I have.
All while not feeling worth a crap.
Writing for NaNoWriMo has been low on the priority list.

This week I’m really hitting it hard, but I’m also taking advantage of the extra time to take some care of myself and my needs.

In my time with hope*writers, I’ve encountered the writing of Julia Cameron, who insists we take an “artist date” at least once a week.

An artist date is simply a date with oneself where one fills one’s soul with creativity. It’s appropriately vague to include all manner of activities, and an artist is anyone who creates for work or pleasure.

I’ve been to museums, garden tours, craft stores, and nature walks as artists dates, and I’m always on the lookout for more ideas.

I also haven’t been on an artist date in several weeks. It’s so easy to schedule other things, especially work, or to make excuses, especially when I don’t feel good, and I forget that this is a crucial part of maintaining healthy mental balance.

My work depends on my creativity, and so taking care of my creativity is just as important as taking care of my physical needs.

So my challenge is to not only take it easy this Thanksgiving week but to make this a week of self-care:

Photo by Madison Inouye on Pexels.com

MONDAY: paint my nails
TUESDAY: watch a movie
WEDNESDAY: dinner out
THURSDAY: nap
FRIDAY: bubble bath
SATURDAY: craft and reading time
SUNDAY: hair, face, or foot mask (or maybe all three)

If I can schedule my writing time then I can schedule my self-care time as well.

How are you taking care of yourself this week? Do you have any great ideas for self-care or an artist date?

…down but not out

It’s almost halfway through the month, and here I am, sitting at 3,000 words.

It feels hopeless

Too big to tackle

Photo by Kampus Production on Pexels.com

…but

I happen to know a secret my inner demons should know by now…

I’ve done it before.

if I’ve done it before, it’s possible

if it’s possible, it’s attainable

if it’s attainable, and I want it? it’s mine.

I’m no quitter.

If you’ve got the November blues, join the club. Drop me a line and let me know how you’re doing.

It can be about Novels, NaNoWriMo, November, or None of the Above.

We’re in this together, friends, and sometimes we have to fight for our right to just be.

You’re not fighting alone. Don’t give up.

Til next time…

and in this corner…

I get to this point every year…

November is right around the corner…and I’m NOT READY!

I haven’t done my CHARACTER QUESITONNAIRES!

I haven’t expanded my OUTLINE!

I haven’t done ALL the WORKSHEETS!

Why not? What have I been doing with myself?

WHY is PREPTOBER….NOT…PREPPED?

Slow down…

Deep breath…

and remember…

That’s not the point.

The point of PREPTOBER is not to FINISH or DO anything.

The purpose of PREPTOBER is to get EXCITED for NANOWRIMO.

Photo by Julia Larson on Pexels.com

and I am.

In just a few days, I will undertake this massive mission to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Just knowing that makes me feel strong.

It’s a bit unreal, but then it always is this time of year.

When I see you next, I’ll be elbow deep.

Best of luck.

xxxlinsey

It’s PREPTOBER!

Hello, hello, hello again, and welcome back.

Photo by Zen Chung on Pexels.com

It’s time to get some WRITING done!

Next month is NANOWRIMO, which, if you don’t know, is

NATIONAL

NOVEL

WRITING

MONTH

The challenge is simple but grueling:

Write 50 THOUSAND words….any words at all…in 30 DAYS.

Photo by Startup Stock Photos on Pexels.com

That’s it in a nutshell.

Write any words you want from November 1 to 30th and try to hit 50k, the equivalent of 1,667 words a day.

Because NOVEMBER is such a busy month, PLANNERS and even some PANTSERS like to begin planning their novels in the month of OCTOBER.

Hence, PREPTOBER.

I personally consider myself a PLANTSER. Not only because it’s fun to say, but also because I am a blend of a PLANNER and a PANTSER.
PLANNERS do just that: plan, outline, and world build before they ever start the real work of writing.
PANTSERS just fly by the seat of their pants and write whatever comes to mind.

PLANTSERS do some version of both. I make very detailed outlines of my novels and do all sorts of prep, but when I sit down to write I can’t control the flow of words. I don’t even try anymore. I’ve always said I’m a better editor than a writer, and that’s because I have to edit so much of my own work.

So here’s what I’ve done for PREPTOBER so far:

Photo by Oleg Magni on Pexels.com

*Announced my writing project (NANOWRIMO) and my word count goal (50k)

*Decided my genre, story idea, and point of view (POV)

*Planned my writing time and routine and prepped my writing space

I still have some hard stuff to do:

*Outline

*Character Questionnaires

*Research

All so I will be ready to write at the stroke of midnight on Nov. 1st.

Am I crazy? Probably. Have I done it before? You betcha.

I’m still trying to figure out this writing life, but I know participating in NANOWRIMO has and will continue to help me put my words out there, and I invite you to join me. Believe me, you can.

RAFFLE: In other news, I’ve just begun designing some notebooks and workbooks that are for sale on amazon. COMMENT ON THIS POST to be considered for the drawing for one PREPTOBER workbook and one NANOWRIMO workbook sometime in the next few weeks. I’d love to hear from you.

Happy Fall, Y’all!

I’m back.

My confidence has taken a hit the last few months and you, my dears, have suffered as well.

Instead of following my pledge to document my struggle, I’ve suffered in silence, licking my wounds in hibernation.

NO MORE.

If I cannot honest and open here, then I cannot hope to maintain honesty and openness elsewhere, so let me start with the truth.

I’ve not been ok.

In the interest of privacy, I won’t go into detail, but I have been in physical, mental, and emotional pain for months. I believe we’re all suffering collective trauma from the pandemic, and perhaps that’s all this is, after all. I’ve been balancing the correct medication for my condition and the fallout of the side effects.

None of it is pretty.

We’re headed into the winter, traditionally a rough time for me, but I’ve had a rough summer and I’m feeling pretty good at the moment.

Things are looking up for the first time in a while.

I hope it will last, but I’m also looking ahead to Daylight Savings Time, another rough patch, and prepping for the change in season best I can.

The point I want to make is not what’s been wrong, but how to make it right.

I want to be ok.

But if I’m not…

I want to be helpful
